The Kraken, the sea monster that has become a character in many books and films, can give many of us the creeps. For years, sailors and travelers have been terrified of this monster, and scientists have been amazed by its squid-like appearance. To this day, there is debate as to whether this is a real sea dweller or a figment of the collective imagination that has traveled through the minds of generations.
 
The Lithuanian Mint invites you to embark on a journey of mythical creatures with the new series of four coins Mythical Creatures, each telling a unique story. The first of them, the Sea Monster Kraken silver coin, depicts the terror of sailors – a squid-like, head-legged monster.
In Scandinavian folklore, the kraken is a legendary sea monster of gigantic size, resembling a cephalopod mollusc.
 
According to Scandinavian tales, the kraken lives on the coasts of Norway and Greenland and terrorizes local sailors. Krakens, or cephalopods like them, are said to attack ships and kill travelers, and once they have had their stomach filled, they like to play with the bones of their victims. The debate about the gigantic sea monster has been going on for years, with some people believing in the existence of the kraken, others laughing and advising people to stop watching science fiction films. However, many sailors avoid encountering the creature… Maybe not for nothing? What would you do if you came face to face with this monster?
 
The reverse side depicts a legendary sea terror – the mythical creature kraken – ravaging a ship it has encountered at sea. The meticulous detail and the lush depths of the sea add to the drama of the coin.
