Sigurd used the enchanted sword to kill the dragon Fafnir, who terrorized the countryside by breathing forth poison into the land around him so no one could get close to him or his treasure. Sigurd accepted the challenge to defeat the ill-natured and greedy dragon and in doing so acquired the golden treasure upon which the dragon sat.
