Background information

Coral ecosystems are among the most diverse and vital marine habitats, supporting a vast array of marine life. Found primarily in warm, shallow waters, coral reefs are built by tiny coral polyps that secrete calcium carbonate, forming the reef’s structure over thousands of years. These ecosystems provide shelter, breeding grounds, and food for countless marine species, including fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. Corals also play a crucial role in protecting coastlines by reducing wave energy and preventing erosion. Their symbiotic relationship with algae, which provide nutrients through photosynthesis, enables corals to thrive. Beyond their ecological importance, coral ecosystems contribute to global fisheries, tourism, and medicine. However, they are sensitive to environmental changes such as temperature shifts, pollution, and ocean acidification. Coral ecosystems represent a delicate balance of biodiversity and environmental health, playing a crucial role in maintaining the stability of oceanic life.
