Battle of Midway 2oz High Relief .999 Silver Coin 5$ Liberia 2025
The Battle of Midway was a major naval battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II that took place on 4-7 June 1942, six months after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese Combined Fleet under the command of Isoroku Yamamoto suffered a decisive defeat by the U.S. Pacific Fleet under the command of Chester W. Nimitz near Midway Atoll. The Battle of Midway is widely considered a turning point in the Pacific War.
The reverse of the coin depicts the middle of the fight between two belligerent parties. There is an SBD Dauntless flying high with a stars and stripes behind it. A Japanese A5M Zero that is falling down with a broken engine. Another Zero is being chased by an American F4F Wildcat. Finally we see two aircraft carriers, namely the IJN Kaga and USS Yorktown, with the former in flames, already hit and about to go down.
The obverse shows a more serene view with the American Dauntless taking off from the USS Enterprise. There is nothing superficial when it comes to a more calm scene because the aircraft carriers of the warring opponents could have been up to 155 miles apart.
The "Battle of Midway" coin not only depicts one of the major battles of the Pacific, but it also serves as a good reminder that certain things cannot be taken for granted and that we are standing on the shoulders of giants.
