1986 saw the debut of Australian Nugget/Kangaroo Gold Bullion coins. This is a legal tender coin that is backed by the Western Australian Government. Minted at one of the finest mints in Australia, the Perth Mint, these are renowned for their high minting quality, fine gold content, and beautiful annually changing designs have made it an international sensation. These coins are available for very competitive premiums and hence are extremely popular.

Australia is the second largest gold producing country in the world and has provided a variety of bullion series to the world. From 1986-1989, the reverse of the Australian Gold Nugget/Kangaroo used the actual nugget images. However, these did not make much of an impact on the international market as people could not relate to the design. So from 1990, the reverse design was changed to Kangaroo images. Kangaroo is the national symbol of Australia and is recognized internationally, therefore, it instantly became popular. Since then the design on the reverse features different Kangaroo portraits each year while the obverse design of a right facing bust portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, a design by Ian Rank-Broadley, stays the same since the beginning.
