Silver Chinese Panda coins were the first bullion coins in the world introduced with rotating designs on the obverse of the coin. In fact, in its more-than-30-year history, the Silver Chinese Panda coin has only reused a design element on back-to-back years once, in 2001 and 2002.
When these coins were first introduced in 1983, they were only available as proof specimens with .900 silver content. After a one-year hiatus in 1986, the coins were reintroduced in 1987 featuring .925 silver, and did not increase to the current .999 fine silver until 1989. Today, the program has undergone another change, with all weights listed in Grams now rather than Troy ounces.
Each of the 2013 1 oz Silver Chinese Panda coins available today from Silver.com has a Brilliant Uncirculated grade. Coins in BU condition exhibit no signs of wear and tear, although you may notice minor imperfections such as breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.
On the obverse side of the coin is the one-time design in use for 2013. It includes the image of three pandas drinking from the waters of a calm stream. The traditional wall of bamboo is featured in the background, along with engravings of the weight, purity, and metal content of the coin, as well as its face value.
The reverse of the 2013 1 oz Silver Chinese Panda Coin includes the common theme of the Temple of Heaven. Used on the reverse since 1983, this image depicts the outer façade of the Temple of Heaven, the main building in a larger religious complex located in south-central Beijing.
Silver Chinese Panda coins bear no mint marks, making it difficult to ascertain which Chinese Mint facility produced each product. They are, however, typically struck at facilities in either Shenzhen, Shanghai, or Shenyang.
