In the depths of the dark streets of Victorian London, where the fog hides secrets, a tale is born, enchanted in silver – the Sherlock Holmes The Sign of the Four 2 oz coin.
Sherlock Holmes The Sign of the Four is the second release in the 2 oz series, following A Study in Scarlet. At first glance, it captivates not only with its meticulous craftsmanship and ultra-high relief but also with the extraordinary atmosphere, evoking a world full of mysteries and intrigues typical of the adventures of the most famous detective.
The reverse directly takes us to the climactic scene of Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of the Four. In the center of the composition, we see Sherlock Holmes in a long coat, holding a precious pearl, selectively gilded – a key piece of evidence in the case, shedding new light on the mystery of the mysterious parcels received by Mary Morstan. Beside him stands Dr. Watson, elegantly dressed in a Victorian suit, with the seriousness and care typical of a devoted friend and adventure companion. Meanwhile, Mary Morstan, in a delicate dress reminiscent of the era, listens attentively to the brilliant detective’s deductions. This scene perfectly captures the moment when the characters' fates intertwine, not only in the case they are solving but also in their personal lives – after all, The Sign of the Four brings a shared future for Watson and Mary.
The background features a richly furnished Victorian salon, where ornate furniture, a massive sofa, and atmospheric curtains stand out. On the wall, colorful flowers, made using UV printing technology, can be seen. These flowers are not just decoration – they are a hidden symbol referring to the exotic elements in the plot of The Sign of the Four, where colonial and oriental motifs play a significant role.
The entire design is executed in ultra-high relief, adding realism to the scene and highlighting the richness of details. Above the characters, there is an arching inscription "THE SIGN OF FOUR," and at the lower edge of the coin, the detective's name: "SHERLOCK HOLMES." An additional, unusual touch is the light green elements that reveal themselves under UV light – like traces leading to the discovery of further secrets. The culmination of this refined design is the numbered edge, indicating the highly limited mintage, further emphasizing the exclusive nature of the entire release – ONLY 400 PIECES WORLDWIDE!
On the obverse of the coin, the issuer’s coat of arms is prominently displayed at the top above Tower Bridge. This iconic London bridge stretches nearly across the entire width of the design, showcasing its monumental structure in a way that conveys both architectural precision and historical majesty. Surrounded by decorative ornaments, at the lower edge of the obverse, there is an intriguing 3D insert in the shape of a pipe. Made in a bronze color, it evokes the inseparable attribute of Holmes and seems to lie on the edge of the coin, ready to be picked up by the detective himself. The entire design is completed with engraved inscriptions indicating the year of release and the face value, which subtly blend into the background filled with small decorations.
Thanks to the combination of top-notch craftsmanship and enchanting presentation, this numismatic item becomes not only a testament to minting artistry but also an invitation to immerse oneself in the dark, mysterious world of The Sign of the Four.
