2016 $20 Baby Animals Fine Silver Coin and Stamp Set - Porcupine

This 2016 $20 fine silver coin was issued to celebrate Canada's rich biodiversity, and highlights the animal kingdom's family bonds with endearing images of Canada's baby animals. The image features a young porcupine (porcupette) learning to forage alongside its mother in one of Canada's many forests. The coin is struck in .9999 fine silver and weighs just over one ounce.

This selectively coloured $20 fine silver coin features a side view image and the use of selective colouring to re-create the porcupette's dense black coat intermingled with long guard hairs and white-tinged quills. In the background, its mother has turned a curious eye toward the viewer, and the dark-coloured porcupette is focused on the pink clover and green leaves. Gripping the wildflower in its forepaw, the porcupette brings it to its mouth to enjoy a small feast as part of the transition to its herbaceous diet.
