The runic alphabet (Elder Futhark) is a script once used by Germanic peoples. According to beliefs, the god Odin sacrificed his life to receive knowledge of runic magic so he could share it with others.

The alphabet, which consists of 24 characters called runes, was carved in various materials: wood, bone, metal, and most often in stone. Each rune has a specific sound and meaning.

Germania, the heroine of the flagship coin series from Germania Mint, encountered the runes while exploring a new land. Runes also accompany the Valkyries, goddesses and daughters of Odin, who support soldiers who have fallen in battle. And it does not end there…

Ehwaz is the nineteenth rune of the Futhark and the third of the Tīwaz family. It is preceded by Berkanan and followed by Mannaz. It is called Eh in Anglo-Saxon, meaning "horse"1. Its use was abandoned in the short version of the runic alphabet used in Scandinavia, so that there is no name in Old Norse.

The loss of this rune in the Late Futhark is explained by the instability of the Proto-Germanic vocalic system. The difference that existed between Ehwaz (/e/) and Eihwaz (/ï/) was gradually lost, making one of the two runes useless: thus, only Eihwaz was retained to transcribe Old Norse. On the other hand, Anglo-Saxon retained these two runes but modified the value of Eihwaz, which became Eoh, to the diphthong /eo/.

Codex Vindobonensis 795 gives a corresponding letter name in the Gothic alphabet as eyz, restored in Gothic as aiƕus (𐌴). *Ehwaz is the reconstructed form for Proto-Germanic from this correspondence and Old Saxon ehu.
