The Natura's ''Nature's Families'' theme began in 2011 and featured the meerkat family. The 2012 coins featured the African painted wolf. The zebra (Equidea) family features in 2013 and concludes thi theme. Visually linking all three themes, the common observe of all the coins depicts seven animals.
 
Zebras live in family groups (Harems) that consist of one stallion, his mares and their young ones. During migration, many families group together but remain a family under the protection of the stallion.
 
Within each harem, the stallion has mating rights to his mares. Females first foal around 3 years old. The foal is able to stand shortly after birth, walk within 15 minutes and run after only an hour.
 
The Zebra's distinctive white and black stripes come in different patterns, unique to each individual.
