Issued as the third item of the Canadian Wildlife Coin Series revealing the rich and fascinating fauna of the maple leaf country, a new “Cougar” coin is dedicated to the cougar also known as puma, mountain lion, mountain cat, catamount or panther in other regions of the world.
Represented on the obverse, there is the portrait of Her Majesty Elizabeth II. The upper part of the coin includes the inscription indicating the Queen’s name. Below the portrait, there are the legends denoting the face value of the coin as well as its issuing year.
The reverse design features a fully colored Canadian cougar in the mountain wilderness perched atop a fallen tree. Considered the second largest cat in the Americas, the cougar is one of only three wild field species living in Canada. At the top of the reverse, there is the inscription indicating the name of the issuing country. The metal fineness and standard of coinage are indicated at the bottom of the coin.
