Self Portrait 1889 by Vincent van Gogh

Arguable to be Vincent van Gogh’s final self-portrait, this painting was created during a turbulent and transformative period of his life. Capturing the emotions relating to van Gogh’s internal struggle with mental illness, solitude, and sense of self-awareness, the artwork explores his psyche and motivations then.

By the time van Gogh painted this self-portrait in 1889, he had already experienced significant psychological turmoil. In December 1888, his breakdown resulted in him cutting off part of his own ear. Following this event, van Gogh voluntarily admitted himself to an asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France. Despite his mental health struggles, it was in this period that van Gogh produced some of his most important works, including Starry Night and this self-portrait. His art during this time reflects a deepening of his emotional and psychological exploration, as he used painting as a means to understand and cope with his inner turmoil.

In this painting, van Gogh presents himself as a man who constantly self-reflects. The direct and intense gaze conveys his internal conflict, suggesting vulnerability and emotional rawness. The portrait is also characterized by the thick, expressive brushstrokes and vivid colors van Gogh is known for, deepening the emotional intensity. Somber notes in the work are also reflected through the primary composition in deep blues, greens and ochres. Coupled with the pale face, angular features and furrowed brows, it emphasizes on the man being burdened by both his thoughts and emotions. Despite the sense of isolation and struggle, the fact of the painting also reveals Van Gogh’s determination to continue creating despite the difficulties.

Vincent van Gogh’s Self-Portrait from September 1889 is a testament to the artist’s convoluted relationship with the world around him. The painting’s vibrant brushwork and expressive color palette convey both the chaos and beauty of van Gogh’s inner life, inviting viewers to experience the artist’s personal turmoil and his remarkable resilience. As with many of his self-portraits, van Gogh’s gaze is direct and unflinching, offering an intimate and vulnerable view into his psyche.
